How to Draw Chalkboard Designs
It seems like everywhere you look nowadays there's a beautiful chalkboard drawing. Whether it's a wedding seating chart or on a restaurant menu board. We had many artists make professional chalk drawings with Liquid Chalk Markers in combination with regular chalk on our Chalkboard Contact Paper. We asked these artists about their techniques and were able to compile a list of chalkboard art drawing tips that were given to us from the very best.
Here are some chalkboard art drawing tips and tricks.
- Avoid Ghosting Effect. The ghosting effect is when you draw on a chalkboard and after it is erased – you still see the images, but in black. To avoid this you want to season the chalkboard. First take a full piece of chalk and lay it flat on the chalkboard and rub it across the entire board. Rub it top to bottom and left to right. After you have completely covered the board, wet the included cloth and ring most of the water out, then wipe the chalk completely off of the board.
- Use Wet Chalk. To get a highlight effect and create brighter colors dip the chalk in water before drawing on the board. As you work, keep dipping the chalk in water to keep it wet. At first, the chalk lines will look faded. Once it's dry it will be bright white or whatever color chalk you are using. You can also keep the board wet and draw on a wet board. Alternatively, you can try Liquid Chalk Markers which have the same effect with less effort.
- Keep it simple. When you are first starting out try to keep your designs simple. Practice makes perfect. The more boards you create the better your drawings, centering, and lettering will become. Start with something easy and perfect your technique. Gradually move up to harder projects.
- Make a sketch. To determine the placement of your images and words on the chalkboard paper draw them out first. Pick one image to make the focus.
- Mix up font styles. For chalk lettering a good rule of thumb is to use no more than 3 fonts. One heavy print font, a script font, and one thin caps font. More than that can feel overwhelming.
- Eraser Cloth. If you need to go back and touch up/clean up any spots that are a little smudged, when the included cloth and dab with the tip to remove tiny smudges.
The most important of the chalkboard art drawing tips is to have fun. There's no right or wrong way to do chalkboard art. Just unroll the chalkboard contact paper, grab the chalk, and let your imagination run wild. Be sure to take a picture of what you created and tag us on social media. Happy Drawing!
